The HL Extension Task
For HL Global Politics, you have to give two 10 minute presentations, each on a case study of your choice. These presentations account for 20% of your final grade, and are a great opportunity for you to learn from each other about a wide variety of topics and examples that will come in handy in the exams. Each presentation must fall under one of the following six broad topics, also known as Global Political Challenges:
You cannot submit two presentations on the same Global Political Challenge.
Through the presentations, you will develop your independent research skills, analytical skills, and presentation skills.
At AC, we give you multiple opportunities to practice these skills, before your final presentations are submitted for the IB.
This is our timeline:
Practice Presentation (not for submission): End of term 1 (first year)
Presentation 1: Before Easter, term 2 (first year)
Presentation 2: End of term 2 (first year)
You have the opportunity to do a 3rd presentation in term 3 (second year), if you are not happy with one of your first two. Then the best two out of your three submissions will be marked for the IB.
We will work on the presentations during some of your weekly double codes, and in the week approaching the presentations. For this, we will meet in the library computer lab, where you can get on with your research and your teacher will be there to support you individually. You will start the process by handing in a proposal, using the proposal form provided. Your teacher will then discuss your topic further with you, and you may submit an outline and a draft for review before you present.
Each presentation will be videotaped, as a random sample will be sent off to the IB for moderation. This is to ensure that the grading is fair across all schools that offer Global Politics, and it also allows you to review our own presentation for feedback.
Presentations will be given on either a Saturday or a Sunday, so that all members of the class present on the same day. In exchange for this weekend day, you will be given some free codes to book off at a later stage. Standard level students will be invited to attend, so they can also benefit from hearing about a big variety of case studies.
