Lab 2.2
Lab 2.2 (Measuring, Marking, Cutting,
Conduit Bending-90 degrees)
Intent:
In this activity, students will be able to identify the route of electrical conduit, bend conduit, cut conduit, ream conduit, and connect conduit to a metal box. Students will be able to apply knowledge of measuring, cutting, and manipulating hand tools.
Outcomes:
Students will be able to:
Apply previous knowledge of construction hand tools
Measure and layout conduit for bending 90 degree angles
Utilize proper conduit bending, cutting, reaming, and connecting techniques.
Tools & Material:
Proper PPE
Tape measure
Pipe bender
Torpedo Level
Hack saw
Pipe reamer
Slotted screwdriver
Linesman pliers
Conduit (10'
Conduit electrical boxes
Conduit box connectors
Conduit couplings
I Do...
Instructor will:
Emphasize safety and check for proper PPE throughout the process
Explain why conduit needs to be bent at a curve rather than perfect right angle.
Discuss the need to bend sweeping curves with a pipe bender so that wire can easily be fished through long sections of pipe.
Demonstrate how to safely and accurately measure, layout, cut, and bend EMT.
Cut a 10' piece of EMT into the following sizes
4' (Cut using a bandsaw)
3'-8" (Cut using a bandsaw)
2'-3" (Cut using a hacksaw)
Demonstrate how to Ream the cut pieces of EMT and explain why its important
Bend each piece of conduit at a 90 degree angle
Connect the 4' piece of conduit to an electrical box using necessary parts/material
Students will:
Actively listen
Take notes
Asks for clarification as needed
We Do...
Instructor will:
Emphasis safety concerns for this activity
Check for proper PPE
Facilitate student progress and give advice/instruction as needed
Students will:
Demonstrate proper safety techniques while wearing required PPE.
Obtain a 10' piece of 1/2" conduit
Measure, mark and cut conduit into three sections measuring...
4' 0"
3' 8"
2' 3"
Ream each piece of conduit
Bend each piece of conduit at a 90 degree angle
Connect the 4' piece of conduit to an electrical box using necessary parts/material
You Do...
Instructor will:
Emphasize safety and check for proper PPE throughout the process
Check for proper PPE
Evaluate the student's finished product for accuracy and sign Skills Evaluation Sheet.
Students will:
Demonstrate proper safety techniques while wearing required PPE.
Measure, mark, cut and ream a piece of EMT that measures 4' 5".
The cut emt must meet a tolerance of 1/16"
Bend the EMT at a 90 degree angle
Connect the piece of conduit to an electrical box using necessary parts/material
Obtain a signature from the instructor for completing Lab 2.1
