Academy Hill

Location, history, walk-ability, views, comfort, convenience...

Academy Hill is a 13 unit condo building that sits atop a hill on Main Street in Jonesborough, Tennessee.   Before being known as Tennessee’s oldest town and the storytelling capital of the world, Jonesborough was a frontier town.  The town was originally part of North Carolina.  In 1784, a few years after Jonesborough was founded, its residents joined with others in northeast Tennessee to create the State of Franklin, which was the first attempt at statehood outside the initial 13 colonies.  Jonesborough was it's first Capital.

Academy Hill occupies the former High School building on Main Street.  A short walk on Main Street reveals many historic attractions, parks, restaurants, shops, churches, inns, B&Bs, and entertainment.  Main Street features the Jonesborough Repertory Theater, the historic Eureka Inn, the Jackson Theater, the Chester Inn Museum, the International Storytelling Center, the Washington County Archives, and the old Washington County Court House.  The Lost State Scenic Walkway runs through town and connects Mill Spring Park, Jimmy Neil Smith Park, WC Rowe Park, Depot Street Park, and the Chucky Depot Museum.   Within a block of Main Street is the Joneborough Visitor Center, the Heritage Alliance, and the Washington County Library.   A few more blocks brings the McKinney Center, the Depot Street Brewery,  and Wetlands Water Park.

There is always something going on in Jonesborough and it is all within walking distance from Academy Hill.  Every Friday evening from May to September Music on the Square takes place where a thousand spectators bring chairs to listen to talented artists perform on the stairs of the courthouse.  Every Sunday afternoon from June to September Brews and Tunes in held in front of the International Story Telling Center.  Local music, local beer, and a food truck always make for a fun time.  From May to October, the Storytelling Center features a Storyteller in Residence each week with shows from Tuesday to Saturday.   The Storyteller's Guild hosts local storytellers every Tuesday night year round.  The Jonesborough Repertory Theater schedules plays and musicals all year.   The Farmer's Market features live music every Saturday morning from April to October.  The Heritage Alliance gives multiple history tours every weekend from March to December, hosts a monthly History Happy Hour as well as historical performances and other events throughout the year.   Join the town for the Jonesborough Days in July and the Christmas parade and events in December.
