How to Audit a Course and Check Accessibility:
While looking at a course to check for accessibility can be overwhelming. Taking it one type of content at a time and breaking it down will make it manageable. Below are the most common content types and steps on how to see if your content is accessible or if it needs remediation.
· Open Word document and go to the Ribbon at the top of the page. Under Review, click on Check Accessibility.
· The accessibility checker will open on the right side of the page. There, it will bring your attention to any errors it sees. When you right-click on the error, it will guide you on how to fix the error.
· It does not check for proper use of headings; you must manually do that by going to View and then clicking on Navigation Pane. It will open on the left side, and you can see if headings are used properly.
· Open All Tools and find Prepare for Accessibility
· In the new dialog box, click on Check for Accessibility
· The results will be displayed and will show the errors. Logical Reading Order and Color Contrast are not checked. Manually check those with the Read Aloud feature or other screen reader and a color contrast analyzer. When you right-click on the error, it will guide you on how to fix the error.
· Open PowerPoint and go to the Ribbon at the top of the page. Under Review, click on Check Accessibility.
· The accessibility checker will open on the right side of the page. There, it will bring your attention to any errors it sees. When you right-click on the error, it will guide you on how to fix the error.
· Some of the PowerPoint versions will check to make sure there is a title on every slide. Some earlier versions of PowerPoint will not, so make sure each slide has a title for navigational purposes.
· Captions in videos – verify that all auto captions are accurate
· Transcripts in videos
· Alternative Text in images, charts, diagrams, etc.
· Secure a VPAT or Accessibility Statement from the publisher.
Any website that you link to should be evaluated. A useful tool to use is the WAVE web accessibility evaluation tool. Once you go to the webpage, copy and paste web page address in and it will evaluate the webpage.
