The Abington Middle / High School Library supports students and faculty by providing a collection of materials, both print and electronic to implement and enrich curriculum and to help ensure students are effective finders, users, and ethical producers of information. The Library also strives to promote reading for pleasure. The Library supports the Technology Department by being the contact point for laptop troubleshooting and repair.
The Library's physical collection consists of print resources, including books, magazines and newspapers. The Library also has a collection of DVDs, for teaching and learning, as well as physical audiobooks, downloadable e-books and audiobooks. The Library provides students with online access to databases. The physical Library collection can be accessed through the Destiny catalog. The link is found on the Library webpage.
The library also offers desktop computers and a quiet atmosphere to relax and do work.
Staff and students are encouraged to recommend materials to be added to the library collection. Although the bulk of the materials are ordered in the spring, a materials list is developed throughout the year. We look forward to making purchases that enhance the curriculum and promote reading for pleasure.
Library Behavior Expectations
Fall 2025
The Library is the place to browse for a good book, do a puzzle with a friend or get some research help. The Library is a Phone-Free-Zone. Please sign in to the library on the designated desktop computer and com to the desk to place your phone in one of the phone daycare pouches. Violation of the phone policy will result in a teacher detention per school policy. The library is also an airpod free zone. If we see visible airpods you will serve a teacher detention per school policy..
📵
If you are visiting the library just to print we also ask that you sign into the library using the designated desktop computer. Since you will only be visiting for a few minutes, you do NOT have to put your phone in the phone daycare holder. HOWEVER, if the library staff see a cell phone, you will serve a teacher detention per school policy.
Food and drink (other than water) are not allowed in the Library.
Students may borrow a book for three weeks and renew it once if nobody else has placed the book on hold. Overdue notices are sent out monthly via email. We ask that you remember to check your email frequently.
Students may borrow 3 books. (5th graders may borrow 2 books at a time.) If the book you want to read is currently unavailable you can place a hold on a title. You will be notified via email that your hold is available and we will hold the title for three days.
When a student borrows a book, they are responsible for caring for this book and the book should be returned in the same condition it was in when the book was checked out. Students should take care while transporting library materials in their backpacks. If a book is returned damaged beyond repair it must be replaced or paid for. Students can begin borrowing physical books again when they take care of their obligation. In the meantime they can always borrow books on SORA. We recommend placing library books in a ziplock bag before putting the books into a backpack.
When visiting the Library, students are asked to sign-in on computers at the circulation desk upon arrival, (unless just coming quickly to print, in which case they should be on an in/out ehall pass from their classroom teacher. )
Students need to request an ehall-pass to use the restroom, go to the nurse, main office, guidance, etc.
Please do not leave the Library to go to next period without waiting for the bell to ring.
The Library is open to Learning Center and AcLab students in addition to any National Honor Society students who wish to visit the Library from their Learning Center, VHS students are assigned here for their class. Students who need research help from Mrs. London are always welcome.
Students may also visit the library during Bridge Block for Bridge Block Enrichment Activities. Please check Enriching Students for the schedule.
The Library may be closed from time to time to accommodate classes from both schools. Please join the library Canvas to receive realtime updates about the status of the library.
Student may use headphones with their laptops to listen to an audiobook or watch a curriculum related video. In fact if a student is watching videos they must use headphones as their noise may disturb others..
The school’s acceptable use policy as stated in the Student Handbook applies
No chair sharing please - 1 chair to 1 student policy
Please refrain from putting feet up on chairs in the Library as the upholstery has to be dry cleaned.
Students are asked to put things back where they found them (furniture, books, magazines, etc.).
Failure to follow these rules may make a student ineligible to come to the Library.
