TARL at Access Bank Fifth Chukker School
When I first met Ibrahim at Access Bank Fifth Chukker School, he struggled with even the simplest questions in English. If you asked his name, he would freeze, glancing at his peers or waiting for his teacher to translate into Hausa before he could respond. He wasn’t lacking intelligence he was simply left behind in a system that measured progress by age and grade rather than actual learning.
Through the Teaching at the Right Level (TaRL) methodology, we began grouping children like Ibrahim according to their learning levels instead of their classes. With targeted support in literacy and numeracy, Ibrahim gradually found his confidence. Today, he can read a paragraph in English and express himself clearly the same boy who once relied on signals from others now answers questions with pride.
Ibrahim’s journey is just one story among over 5,000 students in the school. Many of them faced similar struggles, but by implementing TaRL, we created space for every child to learn at their own pace. Within a year, literacy and numeracy improved by 20%, and the classrooms began to fill with voices of children who previously remained silent. Leading this transformation showed me that when education meets children where they are, it doesn’t just change their grades it changes their futures.
