Comenius Schule Mönchengladbach

Our school is a Hauptschule and is called “Comenius-Schule”. It is situated at a street called Dohler Straße, which is in Rheydt, the southern part of Mönchengladbach.

We have got 18 classes with about 360 students, 37 teachers, 2 trainees and a social worker. About 50% of our students have a “migration background”. Our students come from over 30 different countries.

Classes start with form 5 and they go up to form 10.

Our students are from 10 to 16 years old.

The following subjects are obligatory:

Maths, German, English, geography, history, politics, physics, biology/chemistry, religious education/global learning/practical philosophy, physical education, cooking, technology, textile processing, music and art.

These subjects / clubs can be additionally chosen:

Processing, nutrition-motion-health, literature for the youth, critical reading of “migration literature”, IT, conflict solving, firm for students, media competences, digital art, dealing with media,

chess, drama group, percussion, school magazine, football, hockey, table tennis and, of course, our Erasmus projects.

We have 2 half terms and at the end of each half term we get a report. All over the year we have to write class tests (in maths, German and English) and small written or oral tests.

In form 8, 9 and 10 we also have to pass certain qualification tests.

There are 3 different kind of secondary school qualifications to be reached:

· Students can leave after class 9 if they have already been to school for 10 years. This is the lowest possible qualification.

· Qualification type 10 A: most of our students will get this qualification.

· Qualification type 10B: This qualification can be compared with the English GCSE and you need it if you want to go further on to “higher education schools” like grammar schools etc. or you need it for some special jobs.
