Taste of Tradition: A Journey Through the Asian American Identity explores Asian American heritage and oral histories through the lens of culinary traditions. This project was created to preserve the personal narratives, family recipes, and cultural traditions that shape the Asian American experience. By documenting these stories, we honor the journeys of immigrants, celebrate the richness of our diverse backgrounds, and ensure that future generations can connect with their heritage.
Oral history is a powerful way to capture and share lived experiences. Through interviews, participants reflected on their immigration stories, family traditions, and the role food has played in shaping their identities. Each story is unique, yet together, they weave a collective narrative of resilience, adaptation, and cultural pride. Alongside these personal accounts, participants shared meaningful recipes—dishes that hold deep cultural significance and serve as a bridge between generations.
This project was inspired by my grandmother’s cooking and a workshop with AAYL that explored oral histories and story maps. Recognizing the importance of preserving these traditions, Taste of Tradition was designed to give Asian American high school students the opportunity to explore their cultural roots, connect with their peers, and strengthen their appreciation for their community. By engaging in storytelling and recipe collection, participants not only deepened their understanding of their own heritage but also contributed to a growing archive of Asian American experiences.
The final product of this project is this book—a collection of stories and recipes that serve as a lasting tribute to the voices and traditions of Asian American families. Participants took part in a structured process that included interviews, recipe collection, and a final presentation, all aimed at fostering cultural appreciation and intergenerational connections.
At its core, Taste of Tradition is about more than just food. It is about preserving oral histories, strengthening community connections, and ensuring that our cultural heritage continues to be celebrated and passed down. May these stories and recipes inspire you to reflect on your own roots, engage in meaningful conversations with loved ones, and carry forward the traditions that define who we are.
