Metropolitan Sovereign Chapter Rose Croix, No. 1

Established 2nd April 1858 (formerly No.11 under Supreme Council for England - consecrated 3rd April 1858)

This is the oldest warranted Rose Croix Chapter in Australia and it was the first warrant issued by the Supreme Council for England, etc., for a Chapter meeting outside the UK. Members of note have included Sir Rupert Clarke, 2nd Baronet Rupertswood (pastoralist and entrepreneur son of Sir William Clarke), Rev. Dr Alfred T Holden, CBE, DD 33° (first Inspector General 33° for Australia - Southern Division, and Grand Master of the United Grand Lodge of Victoria, 1912-14), Lt William D Joynt, VC (renowned soldier), Capt. James HH Macgregor-Dowsett, OBE, KStJ (first president of the Victorian Association of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire), Henry W Lowry 32° (a leading light of Victorian Freemasonry), Philip S Malcolm 33° (Inspector General 33° for Oregon USA, Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Oregon, Grand Commander of the Great Priory of Oregon & member of Supreme Council for USA Southern Jurisdiction 1911-1929), Sir Henry Weedon, MLC (prominent businessman, lord mayor of Melbourne), Sir William Upjohn, OBE (a founder of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons and Chancellor of the University of Melbourne, 1966-7), Sir Matthew Davies, KB (solicitor, speculator, politician and philanthropist), Comdr. MGHW Ross (Port Phillip maritime surveyor), and Grand Masters of Freemasonry in Victoria: Dr Walter Balls-Headley (1905-7), George Emery, CBE (1907-9, also first administrative head of the State Savings Bank of Victoria), and Lt-Col Dr Charles Carty-Salmon (1914-17, a federal politician).

Meets normally on evenings of 3rd Monday in March, May (E), September and November at the Preston Masonic Centre, 382 Bell Street, Preston 3072
