The Unit
Audience: 7-8 grade band students
Objective: By the end of the lesson, all students will be able to compose an original Blues composition using digital tools and incorporating at least one melodic, harmonic, bass and percussion instrument.
National Core Arts Standards:
- MU:Cr1.1.T.Ia (Imagine) Generate melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic ideas for compositions using digital tools.
- MU:Cr2.1.T.Ia (Plan & Make) Select melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic ideas to develop into larger works using digital tools and resources.
- MU:Cr3.1.T.Ia (Evaluate & Refine) Drawing on feedback from teachers and peers, develop and implement strategies to improve and refine the technical and expressive aspects of draft composition.
- MU:Cr3.2.T.Ia (Present) Share composition that demonstrates a proficient level of musical and technological craftsmanship as well as the use of digital tools and resources in developing and organizing musical ideas.
Activities
Activities
1) Students select at least two inspiration pieces and brainstorm how the elements of the Blues can be incorporated into an original composition, and created with digital tools.
2) Students use composition software (GarageBand or Logic) to create first draft, then after reworking and focusing on definitive Blues elements, the second draft is evaluated by peers and teacher.
3) Peer and teacher feedback is then incorporated into the third draft, which is then presented to another student. Together, they devise a refinement plan for the final draft.
4) With their student Google drive, they present their final draft, which includes the use of music elements, compositional message, and the digital tools that were used. Final presentation with audio, peer reviews via rubric submitted to teacher for final grade.

- Juno quiz on the key elements of the Blues form - to confirm necessary elements of the Blues form including instrumentation, chord progressions, bass lines, and swing rhythms.
2. Practica Musica quiz - elements of the Blues tested with Practica Musica software - to confirm understanding and application of music elements like scales, accidentals, form and chord types in various scenarios.
3. Finale notation assignment - to confirm student understanding of blues scales and chords and be able to apply toward music notation in an original composition.

Three Feedback Methods
- Juno comments for online quizzes - Students retake the quiz until all answers are correct - Juno will auto-grade after the student has completed the quiz each time and tell them which questions are incorrect.
- Practica Musica feedback and teacher feedback via Jupiter Grades - software gives immediate specific feedback of what they were successful at and if they need to try again - students retake the same or similar questions; teacher feedback via Jupiter Grades; students individually review specific areas they need the most help on on and/or spent the most time on.
- Finale feedback via Jupiter Grades - teacher feedback via Jupiter Grades - student will fix notation, melodic or harmonic errors and resubmit Finale file to Jupiter Grades.

Student response: individual theory games, quizzes and notation assignments
Monitor response: teacher monitors grades, time spent, responses and analysis of notation
Diagnose Response: observe scores and notation, and record in gradebook
