As I reflect on the information throughout this module, I realize I have more work to do to better align my teaching with the ISTE standards. Now that I have created my first infographic on music copyright, I will continue to teach my students about intellectual property and the legal use of digital information. I have recently shared the ISTE student poster with my classes and started to unpack the details by making connections with our projects and quizzes in our music classes. I would also like to create a few simple activities, like a jigsaw, partner research project, and Juno quizzes on Creative Commons, public domain, and fair use music. For all daily demonstrations, I will continue to model digital etiquette on campus and at home. Lastly I plan to further my original student compositions that are posted on various social sites like SoundCloud, and have their peers evaluate them based on a given rubric.
This learning module has also reminded me of all the important nuances of intellectual property, copyright, and that all of my (music) students need to not only be aware of how to be a good digital citizen, but also need to know how to practice this on a daily basis at school and at home. My understanding of Standard E (the online teacher models, guides, and encourages legal, ethical, and safe behavior related to technology use) has been especially strengthened though our LEC activities, in particular my understanding of the relationships between music copyright, public domain, Creative Commons and fair use. I now have several resources to help my students create, share and protect their original work, and know how to respect peer work as well.
