Volunteered Geographic Information Activities as Data Literacy Instructional Approaches:
A Critical Examination of Crisis Data and Information Sharing

Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) activities provide a data literacy instructional approach that allows participants to begin working with big data in a non-competitive, cooperative environment. Research findings suggest these mapping activities, where students work with GIS and map data to create and update open source maps, offer an effective means of teaching data literacy-related competencies. This presentation will discuss how librarians can leverage VGI activities to support critical data literacy instruction. It will approach data literacy from a societal perspective, considering the ethical, legal, and social applications of map and crisis data. I will also present findings from my research into student motivation for participation in VGI activities.
