Healthcare Reimbursement Intern
FORVIS is one of the top 10 public accounting firms in the United States that is a result of the merger between the strong legacies of BKD and DHG. FORVIS has over 6,000 team members who are dedicated to providing their clients an Unmatched Client Experience through the use of assurance, tax, and consulting services for all clients residing in all 50 states, the United Kingdom, and the Cayman Islands.
FORVIS is currently located in the south tower of the Capital Center building in downtown Indianapolis. The FORVIS office will be moving offices this upcoming summer in the phase 2 opening of the Bottleworks District, which is also located in downtown Indianapolis.
Some of my primary responsibilities include preparing Medicare and Medicaid cost reports for long term care facilities and related engagements.
I utilize my time management and organizational skills to manage multiple consulting engagements to deliver unmatched client service.
I offer support to existing client project teams with analytical and reporting needs.
Lastly, I assist with other healthcare assurance or consulting engagements as needed.
I strengthened my organizational and time management skills by successfully completing cost reports for several clients at a time and I ensured that they were completed in a timely manner before our Medicaid/Medicare cost report deadlines.
I enhanced my knowledge on effective management/leadership skills by being able to shadow and work closely alongside senior staff members and management personnel to learn from their skillset in order to develop my own.
I deepened my level of understanding on the financial aspect of healthcare in a professional work environment. I am now aware of what a career in healthcare finance looks like.
My time at FORVIS has been very beneficial in developing various professional skills that I can take forward in my future career. I have enhanced my time management skills as I have been working on completing various client cost reports at a time. One important skill that FORVIS has taught me is being able to adapt quickly to new things, as conducting cost reports can be a difficult task but this experience has done a great job at setting me up for success. One current professional weakness that I possess is that I have difficulty asking for help when needed. I tend to get in my head at times and reframe from asking questions as I am nervous that asking too many questions would look badly on my abilities to successfully complete tasks and solve problems independently. This internship has allowed me to work on this weakness as it has taught me that asking questions is important and allows you to excel more professionally in the long run.
During my time at FORVIS I have been able to make many connections of what I have been working on to what I have learned in some of the courses I have taken at IUPUI. As my primary responsibility is to work on conducting cost reports, I have been able to use my knowledge from Healthcare Accounting (PBHL-H200), Finance and Budgeting (PBHL-H352), and Advanced Finance and Budgeting (PBHL-H353) to connect various terms and principles to my work. These courses have helped prepare me during my internship as I was already familiar with creating financial statements and how to interpret them before starting this internship! I have to interpret many financial statements on a daily basis in order to successfully complete my cost reports, which I was able to learn from these courses. I am grateful to have completed these courses before starting this internship, as I know they have had a tremendous effect on my performance thus far.
