Choosing your Bus ticket...
This website concentrates on day trips to and from Crail. As a consequence we tend to recommend one of various "Day Tickets" which give you the freedom to travel on a variety of buses in a specific area.
If you are travelling as far as a return journey between Crail and St Andrews then a "Day Ticket" will be much cheaper than other types of ticket and gives you the freedom to change buses and routes as you want during the day.
If you need help when travelling by bus you may be interested in cards you can show to the driver to explain what help you need.
As the 95 bus is operated by Stagecoach we will start with their Dayrider tickets.

There are various levels of tickets that we suggest:
The North East Fife Adult Dayrider covers the 95, X58 and X60 from St Andrews to Upper Largo plus a wide range of local connections from St Andrews and even Dundee - the price is £8.50 from Sunday 31st March 2024.
From Sunday 2nd June 2024 the area is expanded to include Leven and Glenrothes to help with connections to trains in Leven.
The change also means the Zone boundaries match those of the ABC Bus Tickets East Fife and Dundee Zone shown below...
And the East Scotland Dayrider covers all East Scotland Stagecoach buses out to Glasgow on the X24 or X27, to Edinburgh by Stagecoach Express and up to Aberdeen on the X7 - plus local travel to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary on the 59 or Aberdeen Airport on the 727 - its price is £11.50 from Sunday 31st March 2024.
"Group" versions of the above tickets are also available. The Group ticket covers up to 5 people (children or adults) from 9am on weekdays or all day at the weekend - the prices are £21.30 for a Regional Zone like the North East Fife Zone and £29.30 for the East Scotland Zone from Sunday31st March 2024.
One other thing to mention is Stagecoach "Day Return tickets" - these tickets are more restrictive in their use - in that you cannot change buses during your journey. Which means typically that they are not much use travelling to and from Crail as you need to change bus to or from the 95 at some point in your journey. But if, for example, you were wanting a return ticket between St Andrews and Edinburgh then you could get one for £7.60 - and having chosen to travel from St Andrews you have a choice of 3 return buses from Edinburgh, the X59, X58 and X60...
But what if you need to use other operators' buses?
ABC Bus Tickets originated in Dundee allowing you to use buses operated by Xplore Dundee, Stagecoach and Moffat & Williamson - from 3rd June 2019 their zones extend to cover East Fife:
The East Fife Zone ABC Bus Ticket includes Leven and Glenrothes, and adds travel on Moffat & Williamson buses - a day ticket costs £10.70 from 2nd April 2023.
Adding travel within the Dundee Zone on Stagecoach, Moffat & Williamson or Xplore Dundee buses increases the adult day ticket price to £14.60 from 2nd April 2023.
ABC Bus Tickets can only be bought on Smartcards - if you need to buy a Smartcard on the bus this will cost you an extra £1
"One-Ticket" is a scheme originating in Edinburgh which allows you to buy a single ticket that can be used across multiple operators, including train services. The train tickets are quite expensive, and the minimum period you can buy them for is a week, but the "Bus only" tickets can be bought by the day and there are three that are quite interesting:
The Fife Area One-Ticket costs £11.60 (as of 4th April 2023) for an adult and covers the whole of Fife and Kinross, and extends the ticket to cover services from other operators including Moffat & Williamson
The "Travelarea 4" One-Ticket costs £14.40 (from 4th April 2023) for an adult and covers most operators (it even covers Megabus - though those with reserved seats get priority) in Fife and into Edinburgh and Edinburgh Airport and onward travel within the Edinburgh SmartZone. From 30th August 2020 it includes travel on Edinburgh Trams (but NOT the Edinburgh Airport Tram stop).
The "Travelarea 5" One-Ticket costs £18.30 (as of 4th April 2023) for an adult and extends the area to cover Dundee and Stirling and all the way down to Berwick-upon-Tweed. Again Edinburgh Trams are covered - excluding the Edinburgh Airport Tram stop.
You CANNOT buy One-Tickets on the bus!
