Sensei Robert Walther

You can find out more about Sensei Walther on his blog, The Snow Tiger.

Sensei Robert Walther began his martial arts career in 1964. He is currently an eighth degree black belt in Jiu Jitsu, a sixth degree black belt in Karate, and an Instructor of Chi Kung, My Jong Law Horn Kung Fu, Hsing I Kung Fu, Yang style Tai Chi Chuan, and I Chaun Kung Fu. He is the President of the Canadian Jiu Jitsu Council, Chief Instructor of the Snow Tiger Martial Arts Association (which he founded), and Chief Instructor of the 8 Wing Martial Arts Club. For his accomplishments and teaching ability he was inducted into the World Black Belt Hall of Fame in 1991, the 2001 Civilian Coach of the Year at 8 Wing Trenton, and awarded the 2012 Base Commander’s Commendation.

Sensei Walther has been the chief instructor at the 8 Wing Martial Arts Club since its inception in 1973. He instructs students in multiple styles of martial arts, including Chito- Ryu Karate, Canadian Jiu Jitsu, Tai Chi Chuan, and many styles of Kung Fu. His adult students often marvel at the sheer amount of martial arts knowledge he possesses and his constant readiness to share that knowledge with others. Unlike some other martial arts instructors, he does not espouse the view that one style is “best” but recognizes the unique characteristics of each student and will use skills from a variety of styles to best support their learning. He also uses his knowledge of Chinese martial arts to help students suffering from a variety of medical issues.

One of the most amazing things about Sensei Walther’s teaching is his work as a children’s instructor. He teaches students as young as three and always creates meaningful and positive relationships with the children he teaches. Sensei Walther has a unique ability to instantly recognize what any child he meets needs most to succeed. He instinctively knows when to push and and when to pull back so that his students can reach the potential that he sees in them. His influence has positively impacted the lives of all the students he has taught over the years.

"In my personal experience, I can say I would not be the person I am today without his influence. He encouraged me, and still does, to also push my limits and achieve things I never thought possible. He taught me how to stand up for myself, to respect myself, and fight for what I believe in. He made me recognize my value in a way that was genuine and still resonates with me as an adult. His teaching extends far beyond martial arts skills and is a gift to all who are lucky enough to experience his teaching." -Sensei Jessye Nielsen
