OHVA School-Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS)
What is PBIS?
PBIS means a school-wide systematic approach to embed evidence-based practices and data-driven decision making to improve school climate and culture in order to achieve improved academic and social outcomes, and increase learning for all students. PBIS encompasses a wide range of systemic and individualized positive strategies to reinforce positive behaviors.
Here at OHVA:
We will collaborate with parents, staff and students to develop and maintain our school culture, using PBIS, to:
prevent bullying
improve classroom management practices [OTES]
ensure student safety [prevent and reduce Seclusion & Restraint]
promote a positive school climate [OPES] that improves outcomes for all students.
From ODE: We envision that all learning environments in Ohio will implement PBIS as an effective and proactive framework for improving safety, social competence and academic achievement for all students.
How does 7 Mindsets and PBIS work together?
While 7 Mindsets, a Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) program, and Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) are powerful on their own, they're even better when implemented together.
7 Mindsets empowers students to build a positive framework for their minds, and achieve better outcomes in school due to building those mindsets. Research shows that there is a strong correlation between having higher SEL skills and doing better in school as a whole (academically and behaviorally).
PBIS helps encourage the building of this positive framework by providing strategies and supports that help encourage students to continue working hard both in and outside of the classroom.
By having SEL and PBIS systems in place, and when used and promoted effectively, students are motivated to work hard and build a positive mindset, which leads to higher academic achievement and more positive behavioral outcomes!
