Palaces
Welcome to learn about the ancient, amazing, historical palaces of Mesopotamia! Palaces were, and still are, very important because a palace is where the ruler resides. A palace is equally as important historically, it tells a lot about life in ancient Mesopotamia, because of the artifacts found, and more, ancient things.
In different palaces a lot of different artifacts were found telling us about life in Mesopotamia. In Assyrian palaces, a lot of masterful sculptures were found. In Akkadian palaces there were a lot of cylinder seals found. Other things were found in other palaces.
The palaces of Mesopotamia are also a form of art created centuries ago, Made to honor gods and goddesses. Also for us to see how life was, and what happened, making us learn more about our world. (Y.I)
Palace of Nineveh
Lammasu were considered celestial beings representing intelligence. They guarded the palaces of Mesopotamia.
Ziggurats
Ziggurats are the most massive structures in mesopatamia cities, specifically 300ft. Ziggurat are made out of grass, Bitumen/dried mud, and waterproof tar. It also took about the early 2200 BCE to to the late 500 BCE to bulid.
The most famous Ziggurats are the Tower of Babel and the Ziggurat of UR. The Tower of Babel is most famous for the people of the city building a tower to reach the heavens. The Ziggurat of UR is most famous because it was built as a worship place, dedicated to the moon god Nanna.
There are also three parts of the Ziggurat. The top part of the Ziggurat is the only religious part. The middle part of the Ziggurat is where the royalty stays. Then the last part of the Ziggurat is mainly of the warehouse.
Ziggurats have a lot of other details but here are some main ones. The priests were the only people that were allowed into the Temple. Also Ziggurats are the place holders of the ancient Temple. (LS)
Hanging Gardens
According to the legend of Babylon Amytis, the wife of the Babylonian king, Nebuchadnezzar, was feeling very homesick from being away from her homeland in Iran . Nebuchadnezzar didn’t want her to feel homesick and unhappy so he decided to bring her homeland to her. He built the gardens as a replica of her mountainous homeland. He wanted to please his wife, so he thought the gardens needed to be perfect. He intended for her to spend time walking around the gardens and curing her homesickness.
He and his crew built a path in and around the gardens and even irrigated it. Terraces are above large arches like stairs. The gardens were irrigated with fresh water from the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. Some scientists believe that they used a circular shaped device that helped transport water to the very top (about 70-80 feet elevation). However others believed that the Babylonians might have invented the first pump system. (AC)
Ishtar Gate
The ishtar gates are truly beautiful and the fact that they had the manpower and smarts to build something so big is awesome. They built the ishtar gates to show power and wealth of the neo babylonian empire. Which if you ask my opinion on it, is pretty petty but also funny that they did it because of that. It was built with glazed bricks and dragons, aurochs, bulls, and lions. These symbolized the gods Marduk,Adad, and Ishar the doors were also made of cedar.
Some stuff I forget to mention was that the ishtar gates were built in 575 bc. Another thing is that the ishtar gates were damaged by a person trying to remove decorated bricks. About ten were damaged and even though such a small amount could make it buckle. Also the ishtar gate was built by king Nebuchadnezzar ll. So I think that the ishtar gates are so beautiful for the time they were built and awesome that they are still standing. (PB)

Royal Tombs of Ur
Royal tombs are a great part of history. The royal tombs of Ur are about 4,800 years old. Leonard Woolley uncovered a huge gravesite with about 2,000 tombs. Out of all 2,000 tombs there were 16 special ones. These 16 tombs are considered royal tombs.
The Royal tombs were much more exotic than the normal tombs. The royal tombs were made of limestone walls and a mud roof. They also had many treasures. These treasures included gold beads, musical instruments, ceramics, bronze relics, and cylinder seals. Along with the treasures there was also human sacrifice. Wooley found many bodies of men and women dead around the king or queen. (TC)
Homes
Mud Brick Homes
Mud brick homes were a luxury compared to reed homes. These houses had flat roofs so they could do stuff there like plant a garden , sun bath, sleep on the roof. You also had two bedrooms and a courtyard there were also kitchens, living rooms, And squar center room. These types of houses were mainly focused in the city where your house is in the city walls. These more civalised homes were harder to build because mud bricks are EXSPENSIVE! So the people who owned mud brick houses built it themselves just like the people that owned reed homes. (JM)
Reed Homes
Houses in Mesopotamia were an expensive luxury depending on what it’s made of. An example of this would be reed houses. These houses were cheap to build because the materials were cheap . The people who owned reed homes had to build it by themselves. Reed homes only need 1 material to build, REEDS! Reed houses are an ancient way to build houses which originated in Mesopotamia.
These houses are built from the ground up starting by tying reeds together and sticking them straight up. Next you would blend over the reeds and tie those together then you have a reed house.
Reed houses with basic mantnence can last for decades which for the people who live there today is a benifit. This technique of building houses has been around for 4000 years. Reed houses are also environment friendly which is a good thing to do with these houses being near marshes on the outside of the city walls. (JM)
