Q&A
[For All Students]
- Do I need to submit a registration form for Japanese courses in the Study Japan Program (SJP)?
→ No registration form is required. Please attend the first class directly.
- What is the deadline for submitting paper registration forms for General Education or Faculty courses?
→ Within one week after the semester begins. *Deadline: October 8, 2025 (Wed).*
- I was placed in Japanese Level 5. Must I take all classes listed for Level 5? (Same applies to other levels)
→ No. You may choose the classes you wish to take. However, if a class is offered multiple times per week as a set, you must attend all sessions rather than only part of it.
[Exchange Students (Special Auditing Students)]
- Can I register online like Japanese students?
→ No. Exchange students must use the paper registration form.
- May I take only Faculty/Graduate School courses without SJP classes?
→ Yes. Students with advanced Japanese proficiency (e.g., Level 7) may omit SJP. Even students with lower proficiency, such as those in graduate or science fields, may take only specialized courses. However, exchange students are required to register for at least 7 classes per semester to meet visa conditions. Students around Level 6 should note that specialized courses may be demanding.
- How should I decide on my courses?
→ If you take only SJP, simply follow the timetable. Combining SJP with Faculty/Graduate School courses will also allow you to reach the required 7 classes. Consult your tutor or academic advisor when selecting specialized courses. Information from former exchange students (who all reside in the International House) may also be helpful.
- How do I obtain permission for Faculty/Graduate/General Education courses?
→ Check the syllabus for the instructor’s contact information and send an email, or speak directly with the instructor in the first class. Once approved, ask the instructor to sign/stamp your registration form.
- How can I confirm my grades?
→ For exchange students, official transcripts are sent to your home university after completion of the program (September for spring semester, March for fall semester). Some SJP courses (Level 4 or above) may show grades on *manaba*. Faculty/Graduate/General Education grades are not available online. If you need to check before transcripts arrive:
・SJP ➡ Japanese Language Office (General Education Bldg. 1, 4F)
・Faculty/Graduate/General Education ➡ Student Affairs Office of each Faculty/Graduate School
- I am in the second semester of a one-year exchange. Do I need to take the placement test again?
→ No. You may advance to the next level if you passed the previous semester (e.g., Conversation 5 → Conversation 6). If you wish to move to a higher level, or if you did not take SJP previously, please consult your Japanese instructor.
[Privately-Funded Graduate Students / Research Students]
- Do I need to take all classes listed for my placement level?
→ No. Japanese classes are not compulsory. You may select freely from your level’s timetable. However, if a class is offered multiple times per week as a set, you must attend all sessions rather than only part of it.
- My research or fieldwork schedule is uncertain. Can I still join Japanese classes?
→ Yes. However, please choose classes you can attend consistently until the end of the semester whenever possible.
