Daidō Moriyama

Daidō Moriyama was born in 1938 in Osaka, where he studied photography. He moved to Tokyo in 1961 and he worked as an assistant to photographer and filmmaker Eikoh Hosoe, Moriyama began to produce his own collection of photographs depicting the forgotten areas and darker sides of his home. Moriyama is a trailblazer in the world of photography, effectively reinventing street photography. Moriyama was profoundly influenced by American artists like Andy Warhol and William Klein, as well as novelist and poet Jack Kerouac.

This picture was taken by Daidō Moriyama and it depicts a neighborhood street at Shinjuku ward in Tokyo, and there is a shadow of a man staring off into the distance. This picture demonstrates the photographers style in street photography. The main light source of this photograph is the sun that shines a light from behind the photographer. The picture is in black and white and it has a very high contrast, making the shadows deeper and the sunlight brighter.The picture is in black and white to lead our eyes away from the distractions in the background such as signs and the paint job of the buildings. There are leading lines that lead our eyes from the shadow of the man to the distance where there are more buildings, and there are horizontal lines at the top which are horizontal lines.
