The Tracks Program is Mattatuck's version of a first-year camper or "Path to First Class" program. Because we prioritize camper involvement in their troops and patrols, this is not a standalone department area that pulls Scouts away for a large portion of each day. Each of the Nature, Waterfront, and Scoutcraft departments conduct programs at certain times throughout the week. Additionally, a full tour of camp is conducted after dinner on Sunday evening.
The Order of the Arrow is Scouting's National Honor Society, and Mattatuck is proud to have a robust Order of the Arrow program at camp. We are supported by Tschitani Lodge. Highlights of the program include a weekly fellowship and ice cream social on Thursday night at 8:00 PM, rededication opportunities, and Brotherhood conversions. We also offer elections and call-outs for in-council units and call-outs for approved out-of-council units (to get approval, please contact your home lodge chief and lodge adviser). Don't forget to bring your sash!
The cardboard boat race is one of Mattatuck's favorite traditions. Held as the finale of the Water Carnival (see below for more), two Scouts from each unit will race in a troop-built cardboard and duct tape boat from the Dick Giacin Point to First Island and back. Each troop will be provided with a roll of duct tape and some cardboard, but may provide their own, additional supplies if desired. Decorations are encouraged!
Mattatuck's Water Carnival is a cornerstone of your week's fun! We have several events in which each troop in camp compete against one another. On Friday afternoon, the whole camp gathers at the waterfront to cheer on and watch these high-spirited events. Highlights include the oarless rowboat race, the four-person canoe race, a "match relay", a swimmer's medley, and more. The adult leaders don't miss out, either; they have a Scoutmaster funyak race to compete in. It's all capped off by the cardboard boat race.
We don't let the adults go without fun! In addition to the events during the Water Carnival as mentioned above, we offer several other programs, including "Scoutmaster Merit Badge", which involves several challenges for adult leaders. We can teach adults how to belay, give them lifeguarding instruction, and more. One major opportunity is the weeklong "Aquatics Supervision" class, which runs from 1:30 PM - 2:45 PM, Monday - Thursday.
There are two camp-wide campfires per week at Mattatuck. The first is on Sunday night after dinner, so that campers get to meet the staff and have a fun introduction to camp. The second is on Friday night, during Visitor Night. During this time, troops, patrols, and adult leaders will be able to perform their own songs and skits, if desired. Both occur in the Marston Ampitheater. Additionally, each campsite contains a fire ring, and troops are encouraged to hold their own campfires during the week. Don't forget to invite some favorite staff members!
