As a four-term member of the Texas Legislature, I have been active both locally in my district, as well as state-wide. Supporting Democrats throughout Texas, I joined the quorum break in two sessions to bring much-needed exposure to the abortion and redistricting issues. In addition, last year I launched a County Party Collaboration grant program, distributing over $30,000 to support GOTV, communication and other priorities for local Democratic parties.

Without mentioning your opponent(s) what makes you the best candidate for this position? *

Experience. My 7 years serving in the Texas Legislature has given me an inside view on how laws are made. I've had to work with Legislators and Senators from both sides of the aisle to get valuable legislation passed. I've built the relationship necessary with Democratic Senators who will be key to running what may be a red-leaning Senate.

I am the best candidate for this position because I combine real-world governing skills with the ability to actually win. I have built my career on building relationships, persuading across differences, and negotiating complex interests — the exact skills required to govern effectively. My experience in commercial, contract, and corporate law prepares me to deliver results, not rhetoric. I am the only candidate who has the tenacity, energy, and relatability to mobilize young, independent, apathetic, and Republican voters to win the general election in November.

I’m actively involved in the Texas AFL-CIO (before running for office, I was very involved in their endorsement process) and the United Steelworkers where we lobby for bills that support workers.

Without mentioning your opponent(s) what makes you the best candidate for this position? *

As the District 13 Assistant Director for the United Steelworkers, I represent about 200,000 workers across Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, and Oklahoma. Over the last decade, I've negotiated over 1,000 contracts against powerful corporations who hire the best lawyers money can buy and I consistently win higher wages, better benefits, and job security for working people because I inspire them to stick together and use the leverage we have. I've arrived at a plant where employees were making $7.25 an hour and left with their wages risen to $25 an hour.

Texas Democrats are in a tough position because we're in the minority and we go up against well-funded corporate interests. That's everyday life for my colleagues and me in the labor world as we go up against powerful companies who have little incentive to bargain with us since each state in my district is a so-called right-to-work state. I've had my opposition try every intimidation technique in the book including having a sherif follow me and harass me everywhere I go. But I have experience winning significant gains for workers through organizing, coalition-building, and resolve, and I'm going to bring this experience to the Lieutenant Governor's office.

Finally, the Democratic Party has been losing working-class voters over the last few years. I understand working-class voters because I am one. I know what it’s like to grow up in poverty as my single mother worked backbreaking jobs to provide everything she could for us. And I know what it’s like to see my family’s living situation improve after my mom landed a union job. I can speak to working-class issues because my current role at the United Steelworkers is to represent working people and force powerful corporations to treat them fairly.
