Hi, my folks.
Today is just a simple day, but in our minds, we couldn't wait for the Amazon rainforest. We woke up around 6 am and got our usual breakfast from the street. It was delicious! We hopped on the bus and headed to the airport. We fell asleep the moment we got on the plane, especially when some students were playing card games while in the air. We hopped into the airport and arrived in Lima, then Iquitos. It was around two hours of flying. Most of us fell asleep. We saw an enormous Amazon river through the window when we were about to land. We were shocked by how huge it was. Then we got off the plane, and it was really hot and humid.
Of course, we got our bags and looked for our tour guide. We found him and his name was Antony. He was a cool guy. On our way to the hotel, he explained the background of the Iquitos. He said that Iquitos people speak 32-33 different languages. In my mind, I was wondering how people could communicate even though they're in the same city. We arrived at our hotel, and it was a nice hotel! We got to our room and put our bags in our room, and our room was very, very hot. We turned on the AC so it could turn to Iceland. Antony took us to a steamboat that was first invented in 1850 to be able to go up and down the Amazon River rather than go one way. Before that, people never came back by boat without a mechanic. We learned a lot about the history behind the steamed boat. The boat was designed for the Iquitos tribes to gather rubber trees from the rainforest. That's how they made the money until European people moved to Iquitos, stole the rubber, and planted it in Europe. Iquitos had the largest rubber plantation, at 90 percent. After that, Iquitos' economy went down to 2 percent.
Anyway, he took us to another museum with indigenous artifacts from the Amazon forest. It was incredible. He showed us artifacts, status, history, and many more. The most interesting thing that I learned about indigenous people was a slave group for Europeans carrying rubber. It was a nice trip around the city. We reserved a place for dinner, which is the iron house. Everything is iron inside. We had a great dinner. After that, we went back to the hotel. All of us girls wanted a coconut from the street, so we ordered it, and it was delicious and fresh!! That is all for the day.
Goodnight my folks,
Jami
