Did you know that Fu-Jen Catholic University’s (FJCU) Graduate Institute of Museum Studies signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Technical University of Berlin’s Center for Cultural Studies on Science and Technology in China (TUB’s CCST), one of the universities of “excellence” of Germany on 1st., Aug., 2024. Selected as a university of excellence, Technical University of Berlin is recognized for its technological researches and educational innovations. Through the MoU, two universities place their shared vision for further collaborations of excellence on art and culture, artificial intelligence (AI) technology, and semiconductor industry on the foundation of freedom.
As the representative of the Graduate Institute of Museums Studies at Fu-Jen Catholic University, Sheng-ching Chang mentions her chance to be the visiting researcher of Technical University of Berlin, serving as the foundation for the MoU signing. She then explains that “the democratic system and the freedom of Taiwan has provided opportunities for people to discuss everything straightforwardly. That is unique among Asian countries.” In addition, Sigrun Abels, TUB CCST’s representative also mentions that she found that, “Compared to China, Taiwan embodies the essence of scientific freedom.” That is to say, both of them are looking forward to further discussions and collaborations based on the foundation of “freedom.”

In the MoU signing ceremony, Taiwan Foreign Representative in Germany Jhy-weiShieh emphasizes the importance of equality in interactions, especially under the complicated geo-political situation between Taiwan and Germany. Thus, he is looking forward to the direct interactions between Taiwan and Germany from students to researchers. Moreover, he even mentions that demokra-tee (democratic tea) is the best tea in Taiwan, showcasing the importance of democracy and freedom in international discussions and collaborations.

Sister Maryta Laumann, the founder of the Dept. of Textiles and Clothing, FJCU, mentions her journey from her hometown in Germany to Taiwan, where she has dedicated over 60 years of her life. She emphasizes “kindness” as FJCU’s core value to reach collaborative relationships with universities from around the world, even though there are some political challenges in reality.
In addition, Dirk Forschner, an experienced professor at TUB’s CCST, emphasizes that, in an area of fast-developing technology, it is important to take “humanity” into consideration. Thus, he believes that technology, art and culture are able to be connected closely through collaborations with FJCU. Furthermore, Prof. Dirk Forschner mentions the importance of museums in preserving human technological legacies, indicating the important role of Museum Studies of FJCU in future collaborations. Thus, he expects to have a visit to FJCU during FJCU’s 100-year establishment, strengthening collaborations in the fields of museum studies and semiconductor related industries, and even having some interactive activities such as workshops.
Overall, FJCU signing an MoU with Technical University of Berlin represents not only the exceptional relationship between Taiwan and Berlin but also establishes the foundation for shaping the future of further discussions and collaborations in museum studies and technologies. Especially under FJCU’s 99th year of establishment, the MoU signing can be considered one of FJCU’s milestones based on one of its core values - kindness.
