The diversity of participation in STEM fields remains well below demographics of the larger population. We believe that the current culture in STEM, which is dominated by an apolitical, elitist, competitive, meritocratic, and hyper individualistic mindset, tends to perpetuate the exclusion of traditionally underrepresented populations. A more positive culture can be brought about by working to build a stronger sense of community. We can inspire joy in STEM by dispelling notions of competitiveness, alleviating the sense of individualism, breaking apart hierarchies, illuminating structural deficiencies, and increasing empathy.
This session will lead participants in examining two questions through reflection on their personal experiences and mainstream practices.
How can STEM education be changed to be more welcoming and inclusive?
What are some ways we can inspire joy in STEM education to ensure that greater percentages of under-represented students stay in the field?
Participants will share their stories and collaborate creatively on a zine that graphically presents visions of how we can inspire joy in STEM. Zines offer a way for people to express ideas creatively through graphics, images, and text. They have a long history of giving voice to people who challenge mainstream structures and culture. Zines allow ideas, sentiments, and experiences to be widely disseminated without the need for ample financial, structural, or other resources. Session attendees will have access to the zine to use and share with others.
