Active student engagement in learning is essential in all higher education. No matter the field, we want our students to be engaged and innovative thinkers, flexible problem solvers, consumers of evidence, and deeply curious about how things work in the world. One of the first steps of developing these skills is to “flip the classroom” and have students be actively involved in the co-creation of their own learning.
Listening to podcasts and perusing social media platforms like TikTok are a mainstay of our current landscape, and what’s being learned in higher education courses is an emerging content area that can be used as supplemental study tools. How are students consuming and creating content about their course content that promotes their learning and engagement? How can faculty incorporate these platforms to promote active, hands-on learning experiences? We will share our social media and podcasting academic practices and brainstorm ideas as to how we can use these platforms in innovative ways and promote student learning outcomes.
The workshop will include an introduction to social media and podcasting in higher education; examples of social media learning assignments; examples of social media student-led extra credit assignments; examples of podcast learning assignments. Participants will brainstorm and discuss how to measure outcomes quantitatively and qualitatively. Participants will share examples (from their own courses or from their field) and together, we will create a shared resource bank.
