In 2000, in the course of conducting family visits, Pastor Pan Hsiu-Hsia of the Bread of Life Christian Church in Taipei discovered three families with children in need of extra support. She realized that there are many families with children like this, but they had been hidden from the world and made practically invisible. They were largely kept out of sight where no one could hear them calling out.
Pan Hsiu-hsia, with the warm hospitality of her rural Pingtung upbringing and her faith in God, invited the three families to come together, and they become a support group called “Family of Joy,” through which they could offer encouragement to each other. Therefore, three mothers, one child with developmental delay and two children with Down Syndrome began to get together every Sunday for joyful time.
Thanks to everyone’s support along the way, this tiny seed gradually grew into the fully-formed “Family of Joy” we see today, with service provided through its Sunday School, Happy Living Station, Family of Joy Gardeners, Ta Lung Tung Community Long-term Care (and Day Care) Institution for the disabled people, and the Family of Joy Workshop. These provide a three-fold support system focused around people with disabilities, their parents, and society, so that each person in need of more support, including those with intellectual disabilities, autism, Down Syndrome, etc., and their families, can joyfully learn, work, and live, within the embrace of the love of the Heavenly Father.
