From Pandemic to Art

In 2014, Taiwan passed the Act to Implement the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. In August of this year (2022) the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, Second Report of the Republic of China (Taiwan) review meeting is taking place, with human rights professionals invited to Taiwan to conduct onsite reviews. CRPD emphasizes ample and effective participation by people with disabilities and transparent and meaningful platforms for dialogue which can be carried out in flexible and experiential ways. This is the impetus behind “Artsy Times: Thematic Exhibition of Artistic Creations by People with Disabilities,” led by disability representative organizations and with direct participation by people with disabilities themselves. The Exhibition is centered around the two main themes of “Artistic Creation” and “Easy Read.”

This exhibition is curated by the Family of Joy Social Welfare Foundation, with participation by the Taipei City Yangming Home for the Disabled and the Parents' Association for Persons with Intellectual Disability, Taiwan. Each of these three organizations presents their own exhibit area, with the respective titles: “We Don’t Hide Them Away,” “Hatching Dreams,” and “Simplifying Life with Easy Read.” Through these exhibits, the artistic energy and values of people with disabilities in Taiwan as well as Taiwan’s efforts at promoting Easy Read versions are put on display for international reviewers, representatives from government organizations, citizen organizations, and the public to see.

In this post-pandemic world, we hope that this exhibition allows members of the public to see for themselves the lives and creativity of people with disabilities residing on this island of Taiwan, establishing a basis of equality and respect, and promoting the rights of people with disabilities to live their lives freely.
