IOWA STATE
trash collected by shelter
trash piled up near lookout
trash picked up off hillside
Iowa State volunteers split into two groups. All three of these pictures are from the pavilion and lookout parking lot area. There was a lot of nuisance trash that should have stayed at home or at least made it into the trash cans.
trash pulled from ravine
trash pulled from same ravine
tires pulled from same ravine
Second group concentrated around the hairpin turn by the tennis courts. This area had been heavily used for dumping starting in 2014.
People were dumping tires, house trash, furniture, you name it.
Thank you, Iowa State volunteers, who used ropes to pull tires up the hill.
It was close to Halloween so Steve made candy corn ghost for everyone. We also had barbecued pulled pork and barbecue tofu vegan cornbread, regular cornbread and brownies. It was a nice feast after a productive cleanup. We're greatly thankful for the efforts of volunteers from Iowa State. Elizabeth from Keep Omaha Beautiful lined us up with these volunteers. Thank you, Elizabeth!!!

a couple of days later we saw intentional dumping
yardwaste? why?
a tire was burnt ....smelled terrible!
Unfortunately we had what we called a "retaliatory dump" a couple of days later. Scattered trash, nuisance yard waste bags, rubber tires burnt in the fire pit, trash can turned over, etc.
There's been a criminal group working on undermining our efforts and trying to get the park and the historic Gifford Park Road closed. We do not want to see the criminals win. We will continue our vigilance and stewardship to preserve these green spaces and the historic drive for everyone!
Picture below taken during May 2019 flooding. Looking east toward the power plant one can see the bottoms flooded to Lake Manawa.
