Adopting Mount Vernon Gardens made sense.
Mount Vernon Gardens needed help.In 2019, KOB Friends of Mandan Park adopted Mount Vernon Gardens thru Keep Omaha Beautiful, Inc. Adopt-A-Spot program and KOB Friends of Mandan Park and Mt Vernon Gardens was formed.
We started patrols in early January 2019, documenting some of the trash that had been building up for decades.
Picture below show a few of the areas where tires were concentrated in Mount Vernon Gardens.
Keep Omaha Beautiful sent two groups of Creighton volunteers, one in March and one in April. Read more below or visit Creighton Page.
KOB also sent help around Halloween from Iowa State. Read more below or visit Iowa State Page.
As always, friends, neighbors and members volunteered their time and efforts to restore the park by holding monthly cleanups. Read more below or visit Other 2019 Cleanups Page.
Picture taken from several yards past the north parking lot at Mount Vernon Gardens. These tires were clearly visible. As we got closer, things just seem to get worse with tires, TV sets, furniture and luggage, to name a few odd items. However, it was mostly tires. See pictures above and photo carousel below.
Photo carousel above shows the enormity of the problem in a little more detail.
In March of 2019, we got help from Creighton volunteers through Keep Omaha Beautiful. All these tires were moved to the railroad tracks during a cleanup in March of 2019. See pictures below.
Pictures above and below show volunteers getting tires to pickup spot.

All of these tires could have been kept out of the forest by one piece of fencing. Adding a light would also discourage dumping. We have asked for these things many times...and are still asking.

Volunteers moved trash over two blocks for easy city pick up. One group used a logging rope to rappelled and removed tires along the hillside. Another group worked on a steep ravine in the center of the park.
We had a great meal that was devoured by our hungry group after there hard work.
IOWA STATE
Iowa State volunteers split into two groups, concentrating on the areas around the north shelter and lookout. This area is heavily used to dump and not maintained well. Iowa State volunteers worked diligently beautifying this area. Later we enjoyed a meal, conversation and the view!!!
A lot of nuisance trashed that should have stayed at home or at least made it into the trash cans. We often see critters attracted to takeout containers left from picnickers. It's nice to picnic but sometimes it's best to take any food containers home. Just bring a trash bag with you. It will greatly help the conditions in any park. It helps keep the critters from spreading it before the city gets a chance to pick it up.
Picture taken during a spring clean up at Mandan Park. We cherish these moments that warm our hearts.
