Creighton Fraternity Volunteers were a great group that accomplished a lot. They removed large piles of trash over two blocks away. They worked clearing pallets and tires from behind the ball diamond ravine, and removed trash and tires from the deep ravine by what we call the hairpin turn. See map below detailing problem areas. We found 40 tires at the end of the abandoned roadway at the end of the park; however, we found hundreds more along the hillside and in the forest. A few of the volunteers worked their way down the hillside, gathering the tires into a large pile. Unfortunately, in the spring when we went back to move the tires to their extraction point, they had been scattered for use as a shelter and a bridge among other things.
Map showing the area of concentrated trash and some of the distances volunteers had to walk moving it. It was over two blocks to the end of the teardrop and then another two blocks back, either carrying, pulling by rope or using a wheelbarrow we brought. One of our friends and neighbors Steve also brought his truck to help haul bulk items out. We filled a couple of trash cans that were also carried out by this group. A small detachment went further to the end of the teardrop where tires had been rolled over the cliff and into the woods, some making it all the way to the tracks. Using a logging rope, they rappelled and bounced along the hillside, getting the pile at least into one area near the railroad tracks.
We looked the next year to move them but they had been scattered by homeless and others to be used as land bridges and a temporary shelter. We're looking for the area photograph from the county that clearly shows this and other photos we've taken. All in all, it was a very successful event and we thank the Creighton fraternity who attended. KOB gave us baseball tickets and we felt it only fitting that their leadership should attend on our behalf for having done so much. We had about 40 lbs of chili, crackers, cornbread and cookies that were pretty well devoured by our hungry group after their hard work.
A few pictures showing ravine area before cleanup.
Trash piles from the end of the old abandoned roadway. We asked for one wood pole or two that would have prevented this

Trash taken from hairpin turn ravine. Note the mud on some of the tires…This was a very difficult area to work in, very steep and muddy. They did an outstanding job.
Furniture removed from hairpin turn area, Bill Paar oversaw the work in this difficult-to-work area.
Thank you, Laura Paar, for keeping the food hot and getting it ready for us!
Map accompanied a letter requesting a couple of wood poles and maybe some fencing. We also asked for signage. None of these things ever happened but could have made a huge impact over the years.
