The NZ Police also offer opportunities for Professional Development as your experience in the force increases.
After graduating from Police College, you start your career as a General Duties Constable. This involves responding to emergencies, attending investigations regarding road crashes, family violence, etc. and also participating in preparing files for court and helping to locate missing people. You are required to remain within this role for the first 2 years of your career with the Police force as it allows you to develop and gain crucial knowledge and experience.
Following this period, you have the opportunity to advance to apply for various roles within the NZ Police. There are over 30 roles to chose from, with some of them being detailed below:
Road Policing - This includes Highway Patrol, the Commercial Vehicle Investigation Unit and the Serious Crash Unit
Youth Aid - Working alongside children, adolescence and parents to support youth change their lives for the better.
Family Harm Team - Working to put an end to family violence and supporting the victims of such crimes.
Financial Crime Unit - Monitoring suspicious transactions, large amounts of cash crossing our borders and helping with money-laundering investigations. A background in finance or accounting is helpful for this role.
Child Protection Team - Supporting children who have suffered physical, psychological or sexual abuse through working with community organizations.
Protection Services - Providing protection to important New Zealanders and other guests (e.g. Prime Minister, Governor General, etc.)
Some of these also may require extra training which can be completed at Police College, with you being paid while you study.
