Using the Reflective Model by Rolfe et al. (2001), I will reflect on this Rangahau and how this can help me within my career pathway towards becoming a NZ Police Officer.
What?
I have completed a Rangahau on the career pathway of a Police Officer within New Zealand. This involved researching the requirements of a Police Officer, legislation they are required to follow and how they comply with the Treaty of Waitangi.
So What?
This Rangahau has taught me a lot about what NZ Police have to follow, specifically around local legislation. This is something I knew was in place, but I did not know specifically what these were or how to find out about them.
It has also made me appreciate my Maori culture and the effort the NZ Police are doing towards protecting our culture. I was not aware of all the strategies and forums they had in place for iwi input, which has added inspiration for me personally.
Now what?
With where I am at currently in the police recruitment process, this has highlighted to me how much knowledge is available to me, and that I do not need to wait to go to Police College to do this. As a result, I am planning to embark in further research in regards to local legislation and programmes the police are curently running.
I am also working towards making Te Reo part of my everyday language. Although I am Maori, this was not a large part of my childhood. However, after beginning my course at Te Wananga, I have discovered a love for the language and want to integrate this in my daily life. I will do this through practising this at my work place as well as researching words I can use.
I also acknowledge that my focus needs to be on the Psychometric testing and Physical Appraisal test as this is booked in for 8-10 weeks away.
