We stayed at a lovely country hotel/restaurant outside of Florence that had all the Tuscan delights we could imagine: orchards, vineyards, rolling thunderstorms, a pool, meals on a brick patio, strung with pretty lights, with musical entertainment, a cooking demonstration, charming rooms, and a castle on the near distant hillside. And, of course, a farm cat.
The view from our window looked out to a castle on the hillside.
Both nights in Tuscany, amazing thunderstorms moved in at sunset and gave a cool relief to thoroughly hot days. We watched them slowly move across the sky after dinner, while listening to music and enjoying wine on the patio.
Florence
Our local tour guide walked us through the heart of old Florence and straight in to see Michelangelo's David. While he is the star, the Galleria dell'Accademia is also full of gorgeous Renaissance and gothic paintings. Afterwards, we headed to the Uffizi Gallery, jumping the long line with our reserved tickets, and our guide shared her extensive knowledge of the history of some of the best-known works of art from the house of Medici.
Florence is famous for beef, but it was hot out and we needed something lighter. Florence is also famous for it's Tuscan beans and I love Italian spinach, sauteed with olive oil, garlic, and hot pepper flakes. And a side of pizza, of course.
