What makes Martien's work special, to me, is his ability to enlarge the story's subtleties. Even the word story may be a bit too much for this sketch of a melancholic thought, of a thought of something that could have been or has been and becomes visible in the landscape. The zooming-in, the sketchiness, the layout in the form of horizontal and vertical drawings that almost form lines on their own (as lines are important in the story) — a successful interpretation of a story that emerged from within me when I looked out of the train and saw railway lines disappear in the snow.
