Impromptu's XLVI, LIV, LXXIX and XCII (Hollands Maandblad 2024-12)

On the eve of the one hundreth year of surrealism — give or take a few years!  — the Dutch literary magazine Hollands Maandblad published four impromptus.

Poem Hole in the day, or Poem in the Fat S-Dresmé

Designer and artist Nico Dresmé asked me for a fitting poem for his typography design 'The Fat S-Dresmé'. Years earlier I had woken up with the first lines in my head and written them down, just in case. That turned out to be the beginning of the poem Hole in the Day, which we've been distributing on poster format due to its positivity in both design and message.

The only enemy who has the capacity to remove all of mankind from the earth, is the virus. Imagine the worst of them all, a true 21st century killer. It lies dormant in the remote laboratory of a pharmaceutical giant whose hopes of making billions off a vaccine somewhere in the future throw a dark shadow ahead. Then Hitomi Sakamoto, the hard boiled radio producer who’s on a rough vacation in the wild nature of the north, stumbles upon this dark secret. She is drawn into a final battle between ruthless scientists, a greedy corporation, desperate but dangerous environmental activists, a cold-hearted assassin and… a manmade virus that longs to escape.

Hitomi Sakamoto first appeared in the Radio Detective novels by M.H. Vesseur. Immediately popular for her iron work ethics and razorsharp tongue, Hitomi outgrew her boss (radio detective Carl Pappas) and now steps out of his shadow, into her very own adventure.

The economy is evolving from a man made theory of labor and money towards an autonomous, endless event. Even the wildest conspiracy theory becomes obsolete in the light of this emergence, for no one controls it. And so the economy will continue to grow. M.H. Vesseur, author of speculative stories for literary magazines, expands this prediction and describes the definitive form of a super economy that will soon arrive and forever crush our memories of a better future that once beckoned us. Burning Neil Armstrong is an unforgiving look into the near future.

Burning Neil Armstrong was first published by Nymph (The Netherlands) in 2002.

Glimpses of tomorrow await you in this collection. The ultimate amusement park will offer you death. Everlasting youth will take you to the point of no return. The artificial landscape will fill you with joy if it doesn’t scare the living daylights out of you. The Narcissist Guru will show you your many selves. And then there is the ultimate work of art that will change the planet and the old vaudeville star who is still being stalked.

M.H. Vesseur published many short stories in literary magazines in The Netherlands, Belgium, USA and Canada. This collection contains “In Snuff Park”, “Babyface Junkie”, “Narcissist Guru”, “Territory Games”, “Sketches of a Worldwide Christo And Jeanne-Claude” and “Beloved Stalker”.

New Grass

Inspired by the palm-of-the-hand storywriting of Yasunari Kawabata, M.H. Vesseur wrote this small, delicate tale of a man who becomes devoted to the things he sees from his bedroom window that the borders between dreams and reality start to fade.

This story has been translated by Paul Vincent. Originally published in 2016 by Longshot Press in the short story collection Face Forward.

One More Bloody Mary

Dedicated to singer and songwriter Gerry Rafferty and his unforgettable song Baker Street, the short story One More Bloody Mary focuses on one-time celebrity Gary Royale, who has faded from fame into a life on the sideline. The only people he allows in his life are his former impresario and his current lawyer, nicknamed Lawyerette, who visits him once a year to talk about royalties and contracts.

One More Bloody Mary was published in 2016 by Longshot Island Magazine.

Impromptus

Related to, but shorter than the palm-of-the-hand stories (if that’s even possible), the Impromptus are a work in progress. These are very short, very quick ‘vignettes’ (as Daniel White, editor of Longshot Island and now Unfit calls them), written spontaneously from a sudden idea. They’re written in one stroke, not through endless editing or concepting. Finally, the ones that ‘work’, are selected. Impromptus are being written at irregular intervals. Three of them (the numbers III, VIII and XIII) were pre-published in 2018 by Longshot Island Magazine. Impromptu III was turned into a one-page graphic novel by Martien Bos and published in underground magazine Kutlul in 2019. Since December 2020 many Impromptus find their way into the SHOTS podcast, an audio stream by M.H. Vesseur on Apple Podcasts, Youtube and Spotify. (Dutch and English.)

Campfire Stories

Retold classics by authors like Robert Louis Stevenson and Nikolaj Gogol, and of course by M.H. Vesseur. Shorter stories, reworked for the purpose of a campfire or fireplace reading for your own private audience. A Dutch collection.

If we keep pursueing eternal youth as rigorous as we do now, someday we may find ourselves in a cul-de-sac.

Excerpt

‘Shaking his head, Dr Georg went to his office, leaving the neurotically quarrelling siblings to the care of his team. If Rosalynd rejected even an ordinary advertising campaign, what on earth would her attitude be to his plan to preserve the twins in formaldehyde after their death and to build a museum around them?

It was time to let the lawyers loose on the case again.’

The ultimate amusement park, Snuff Park, offers visitors an unforgettable vacation amidst executioners, guillotines and air disasters, and a night on death row. But in Snuff Park there’s more to the picture than meets the eye…

Excerpt

‘In the desert life and death are inexorable. So those who conceived Snuff Park could have found no better setting for their ideas than the desolation of this desert. Some eight million customers have already made the trip to this region, to visit the only amusement park in the world that has never needed to advertise. Through this gate young and old from all over the world enter fraternally for the experience of a lifetime. Those waiting in line wave their admission tickets, designed in the style of summonses from the federal court. Just a short wait and the gate of what has been called the world’s most exciting amusement park will swing open for everyone aged eighteen and over.’

Translated by Paul Vincent.

Published by Mobius Magazine, USA.

Published by Lava, Utrecht, the Netherlands.

Review of In Snuff Park

‘Take the story In Snuff Park by Martin Vesseur. In a cinematographic structure the reader is offered a satirical view of the voyeuristic society of today. The approach is somewhat reminicent of Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction en could with a willing eye be compared to Vernon God Little. But it particularly excels because it is original and contemporary.’ Matthijs Schiffers, Lava 10.3.

Territory Game

Available as ebook on the Amazon Kindle ISBN 978-94-91908-06-4

Published by Vibes in 2014

Also available in the short story collection “Allusions” (see above)

An entirely artificial landscape responds subtly to the energies of people and machines that pass it by. It draws its colors from the sun and its warmth from a passing car. But how would you feel when this landscape you’re in also responds to… human behavior? That’s all right as long as it’s just flowers opening up to your smile…

Excerpt

‘Then the mother lifted up the laughing and singing girl and threw her in an arc, so that she landed in the gently swelling sea of sunflowers. The child hung there for a while, screaming with pleasure till things quietened down and the flowers began shrinking for want of stimulus, and she finally dropped gently onto the grass as it drained of colour.’

This story has been translated by Paul Vincent.

Originally published in the special renovations issue of Descant, Toronto, Canada 2012.

Excerpt

‘Laetitia laughed. “Are you testing my knowledge? And besides, who bothers to become pregnant these days, mother? Surely there’s absolutely no need for that!”

“I should hope so. If you become pregnant I’ll be forced to kick you out of my will. It has been sorted out, so you’d better be warned.”‘

Filthy Days

Song of the Locust

A man thinks about his dubious past, a mixture of science and love, while his wife plays with her lover across the storm ridden street—amidst the contents of his suitcase.

Although Creation

The divine disclaimer that bans all legal actions against the creation of the world, has recently emerged.

For the 100th edition of the Belgian literary magazine De Brakke Hond one hundred authors were asked for a contribution in the form of a quote—either an existing one or a new one. M.H. Vesseur contributed the divine disclaimer, a lawyer’s perspective on the origin of species.

F*cking Sumo

Tattooed and pierced beyond belief — and relief! — the protagonist shares his physical pains and their necessary soothing effects on his love life.

Excerpt

‘From that moment on I woke up every night, sweating like a construction worker in a heat wave, precisely at the moment my tendril girl was at the verge of being squashed by that enormous wrestler’s body.’

This story has been published in Dutch under its original title: F*cking sumo.

Published by Tirade, Amsterdam, The Netherlands.

Review

‘BUT! Suprisingly there’s two fun stories (yes fun, the word that can under no circumstance be connected to literature, that only dumb people would use, people without sensibilities, who do not appreciate the literary value of a story, and only like it vulgar). In the story ‘F*cking sumo’ by Martin Vesseur the protagonist welcomes us to his website. He starts chattering, but soon mentions his – great word! – pijnwee [translated: a crossing between ‘pain’ and ‘homesick’, meaning ‘longing to go back to the pain’] Soon followed by titles such as ‘My tattoos’, ‘My piercings’ and ‘My forked tongue’.’ Sander Pleij, Vrij Nederland 10, March 2008

This tribute to the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude tells the tale of their imaginary work of art called The Sahara Tent. While they are building this huge installation across the sand dunes of the Sahara, a phenomenon occurs that has the power to change the world and with it the future of the planet. The story premiered in literary magazine De Brakke Hond (Belgium) and in M.H. Vesseur’s short story collection Allusions.

A review of Sketches of a Worldwide Christo and Jeanne-Claude

'A speculative fiction of environmental land art created by the famed artists, where they drape tent cloths over a wide stretch of the Sahara to block out the sun, creating a greenhouse effect with climatic effects on the desert biome that hold potential global implications. An interesting piece that combines sci fi speculation with artistic elements to good effect.'  Daniel Haeusser in the Skiffy & Fanty podcast, reviewing the Unfit Magazine publication.

Excerpt

'Above the voices I heard the grating sound that the sand made as it brushed the tires of the trailer. My trouser legs started flapping. I pulled my hat firmly on my head and began the descent to the Sahara Tent.

Twenty minutes later, at the bottom of the cliff at the foot of a steel staircase built for the public with an awning that gave protection from the sun, I reached the edge of the canvas. The wind did not reach here. The tent cloth hung at most two and a half meters above the sand. As soon as I stepped beneath it, I found myself under a different sky.’

Translated by Paul Vincent. This story was originally published under its original title: Schetsen van een wereldwijde Christo en Jeanne-Claude.

Published by De Brakke Hond (2006, Dutch version), Mechelen, Belgium.

Published by Mythaxis (2020, English version), USA.

Pubished by Unfit Magazine (2018, English version, online publication), USA.

Fat Jesus

Becoming more obese every day the protagonist is doomed to stay home indefinitely, unable to leave his appartment in a normal way.

Excerpt

‘”Eating is an act of resistance!” he shouts, spraying food. “Against the ridicilous dictatorship that you embody, you and your man. Because I know why you are so thin, lady. All you ever do is fight against the calories. You are a mercenary in the army of the thin and against the kilos you shall fight.”

This story has been published in Dutch under its original title: Dikke Jezus.

Published by Lava, Utrecht, the Netherlands.

The Terrible Painting

While residing in Paris after the Second World War painter Karel Appel, suffering from poor living conditions and toxic fumes, sees a horrible alternate reality emerge, leaking from his dreams straight into real life.

Excerpt

‘No, things were looking good in Paris, early 1953. Nothing to eat, no heating, my girlfriend off to Amsterdam to study. But in spite of all that: we were painting. My buddies, me, we were painting canvas after canvas, and canvas after canvas looked terrific and we were looking at a bright future. Recognition was imminent. We didn’t know how, we didn’t know when. We knew.’

This story has been published in Dutch under its original title: Het verschrikkelijke schilderen.

Published by De Brakke Hond, Mechelen, Belgium.

Excerpt

We all remember fondly the Narcissist Guru, one of our century’s most controversial men, who claimed to have found a way to realise a perfect world and who is, in a way, still with us.

‘Somewhere beyond the sand dunes he floats in nitric acid in a transparent cylinder. The polished walls of his glass coffin act as magnifiers and enlarge his figure. The fierce sunshine and rising water vapours of the desert project his image high in the sky. From miles away the pilgrim can enjoy the figure towering benignly above the desert.’
