Strong letters of recommendation can be the tipping point in a competitive application. At VIS, we understand the importance of showcasing your unique talents and achievements, and we're here to guide you through the process of requesting and submitting impactful recommendations. This comprehensive guide outlines every step, from identifying the right recommenders to ensuring timely submission, so you can focus on what matters most: crafting a compelling application.
STEP
1
3-4 MONTHS BEFORE: Schedule a meeting with the University & Career Advisor to discuss your chosen pathway (university program, internship, volunteer program, etc.) and the recommenders you are considering.
STEP
2
2-3 MONTHS BEFORE: Contact your recommenders to request them to write a recommendation letter for you and your chosen pathway.ย
Make sure to include a copy of your Student Bio (Brag Sheet).
Also, share the Guide for Referrers page to ensure your referrer understands the process of submitting a recommendation letter.

After your University & Career Advisor has reviewed and given advise on your recommender's letter, go ahead and ask them to submit it or have it added to your application.
1. Choose Your Recommenders Wisely:
Select individuals who genuinely know your strengths, work ethic, and potential. Ideally, choose one academic recommender (teacher/professor) and one non-academic recommender (coach, mentor, employer).
2. Approach Early and Respectfully:
Reach out to your recommenders at least 4-6 weeks before the application deadline. This gives them ample time to write a thoughtful letter.
Be professional and courteous in your request. Clearly state the opportunity you're applying for and why you believe they'd be an ideal recommender.
3. Provide Supporting Materials:
Refresh your recommender's memory about your accomplishments and experiences relevant to the application.
Share your resume, transcript, and any other documents showcasing your achievements.
Briefly remind them of specific instances where you excelled under their guidance.
4. Follow Up and Express Gratitude:
Send a brief thank-you email after your recommender agrees to write the letter.
Offer to answer any questions they may have.
Once the application is submitted, express your gratitude again for their valuable support.
Bonus Tips:
Be mindful of deadlines and submission requirements. Different programs may have specific instructions or forms for recommendation letters.
Proofread your request email carefully before sending it. Typos and grammatical errors can create a negative impression.
If you haven't interacted with a potential recommender recently, consider scheduling a meeting or brief conversation to refresh their memory and reiterate your interest in their recommendation.
Some systems may ask you to forego your Right to Review, this means you will not be able to see the Letter of Recommendation being submitted. It is generally better to forego because it shows trust in your recommenders.
By following these steps and demonstrating professionalism and courtesy, you can increase your chances of receiving strong letters of recommendation that boost your application's competitiveness. Remember, your recommenders play a crucial role in highlighting your unique qualities and potential, so treat the process with respect and appreciation.
