Welcome to the official THSMUN Page!
In Tallwood High School's Model United Nations Club (THSMUN), students develop their research, public speaking, and collaboration and teamwork skills in a series of fun and engaging "mock United Nations" conferences, discussing topics they are passionate about.
Students will imagine themselves in the shoes of a diplomat representing a national government at the United Nations, where they will debate topics and design solutions to real (or fictional!) global issues including but not limited to climate change, global hunger, conflict, and aliens invading Earth. Members of the MUN team like to say that THSMUN is a mix of research, public speaking, and even a bit of theater.
Tallwood High School's Model United Nations Conference was founded by former senior Meredith Arndt as her senior project analyzing how supranational organizations can adapt to the shifting security paradigm. This project is the first ever middle school conference in Hampton Roads, and is completely run by high school students. Now in its seventh iteration, THSMUNC has given middle school students across Hampton Roads a new and exciting educational opportunity targeted at learning more about the world around them.
Model UN is an international effort to familiarize our youth with global issues and with the art of diplomacy, negotiation and compromise as practiced by the United Nations and other world bodies, gaining an all-encompassing knowledge on important issues that surround ourselves today. Students from all over the world participate in this activity, strengthening skills of all manners, including public speaking, debate and collaboration. They participate in mock United Nation committees and can even participate in creative committees based on both fictional and historic crisis situations. MUN is an invaluable experience that will serve in all aspects of a student's life, preparing them to tackle any challenge they may face in the future.
