Short Vowel: Vowel pronunciation that is the "sound" of the letter rather than the "name" of the letter. Example: the "a" in cat is a short vowel.
Long Vowel: Vowel pronunciation that is the "name" of the letter rather than the "sound" of the letter. Example: the "a" in baby is a long vowel. The "a" says its name.
Open Syllable: A syllable that ends in a vowel. The word "spider" is two syllables: spi/der. The first syllable is open; it ends in a vowel.
Closed Syllable: A syllable that ends in a consonant. The word "spider" is two syllables: spi/der. The second syllable is closed; it ends in a consonant.
Digraph: two letters that make one sound together. Examples: sh, ch, wh
R-Controlled Vowel: when an "r" controls the sound a vowel makes. Example: ar, er, ir, or, and ur.
Diphthong: two vowels that form one sound together. Example: the "oa" in soap and the "ou" in house.
CVC Word: Consonant, vowel, consonant word. Example: cat, mat, nap, pat, etc.
CVCe Word: Consonant, vowel, consonant, "e" word. Example: make, tone, mine, code, etc.
