Phonemes are individual sounds in words.
Phonemic awareness is the ability to hear, identify, blend, and manipulate individual phonemes in words.

Isolate Sounds: to separate/identify sounds in a spoken word into sections (beginning sound, middle sound, end sound).
Phoneme: individual sound in a word. There are 44 phonemes in English.
Blending: putting together individual sounds to say the word outloud.
Segmenting: break down a word into its individual sounds.
Onset: Only used for single-syllable words. Onset is the beginning sound/initial consonants before the vowel. Examples: [c]at. or [sp]eech.
Rime: Only used for single-syllable words. Rime is the vowel and the remaining string of letters after the vowel. Examples: c[at] or sp[eech].
