ENL Information

The Five Levels of English Language Proficiency:

1. ENTERING- This is the beginner ELL student who has great dependence on supports and structures to advance his or her academic language skills. They have yet to meet the linguistic demands necessary to demonstrate English language proficiency in a variety of academic contexts within their grade level.

2. EMERGING- At the low intermediate level, the ELL student shows some dependence on supports and structures to advance his or her academic language skills. They have yet to meet the linguistic demands necessary to demonstrate English language proficiency in a variety of academic contexts within their grade level.

3. TRANSITIONING- At the intermediate level, the ELL student shows some independence in advancing his or her academic language skills. They have yet to meet the linguistic demands necessary to demonstrate English language proficiency in a variety of academic contexts within their grade level.

4. EXPANDING- At the advanced level, the student shows great independence in advancing his or her academic language skills and is approaching the linguistic demands necessary to demonstrate English language proficiency in a variety of academic contexts within their grade level.

5. COMMANDING- The ELL student communicates fluently and can successfully advance in his or her academic language skills. The student has met the linguistic demands necessary to demonstrate English language proficiency in a variety of academic contexts within their grade level.
