Labels in Gmail work like folders, but they’re even more flexible — you can assign multiple labels to a single message. This makes it easy to organize emails by topic, project, or sender so you can quickly find what you need.
📘 Example:
🟩 Students – Student work or questions
🟨 Parents – Parent communication
🟦 Administration – District or principal messages
🟧 Technology – Tech support tickets or updates
To create a new label:
On the left side of Gmail, scroll down and click “Create new label.”
Enter a name for your label (for example, “Parent Communication” or “Tech Support”).
Click Create. Your new label will now appear in your list on the left-hand side.
To organize, drag and drop emails into that label, or right-click a message and choose Label as...
Once set up, labels let you manage your inbox visually and stay organized throughout the year.
⚙️ Create Filters to Automate Your Organization
Filters can help Gmail do the sorting for you by automatically labeling, archiving, or starring incoming messages that meet certain criteria.
To create a filter:
Click the Show search options icon in the Gmail search bar (small funnel symbol).
Enter details like the sender, subject, or keywords you want to filter.
Click Create filter at the bottom of the box.
Choose what Gmail should do (e.g., Apply label, Star it, Skip the inbox, or Mark as read).
💬 Pro Tip: Filters are perfect for newsletters, notifications, or recurring updates—automate them so they skip your inbox and keep your focus on important messages.
💬 Pro Tip: Use color-coded labels to make your inbox easier to scan. Bright colors help you spot key categories at a glance.
