Dell desktops and laptops rely on small pieces of software called drivers to function properly. These drivers allow Windows to communicate with the computer’s hardware — things like audio, video, Wi-Fi, cameras, keyboards, and touchpads.
When drivers are outdated or missing, devices may still turn on — but they don’t always work as expected.
Think of a driver as a translator.
Windows is the “brain”
Hardware (sound, screen, Wi-Fi, etc.) speaks its own language
Drivers help Windows understand and control that hardware
If a driver is outdated or broken, Windows may struggle to communicate — which can lead to issues that feel random or confusing.
Outdated drivers can cause problems such as:
🔇 No sound or sound cutting in and out
🌐 Wi-Fi disconnecting or not appearing
🖥️ Display issues (flickering, black screens, wrong resolution)
🎥 Camera or microphone not working
🖱️ Keyboard, mouse, or touchpad behaving strangely
🖨️ Printers not responding correctly
In many cases, the computer itself isn’t broken — it just needs updated drivers.
To keep Dell devices running properly, the Technology Department uses Dell SupportAssist, an official Dell tool designed to safely update drivers for each specific model.
Automatically detects the exact Dell model
Scans for missing or outdated drivers
Installs the correct updates directly from Dell
Ensures updates are safe and compatible
This tool prevents guesswork and avoids incorrect or risky driver installs.
Driver updates are normal maintenance, not a sign something is wrong
Updates may be required even if the device “mostly works”
Some issues can only be fixed after drivers are updated
Driver updates may require a restart
Updates are typically handled by a Technology Specialist
If you’d like to check for driver updates on your own computer:
Open Dell SupportAssist on your computer
(If it’s already installed, you can find it by searching SupportAssist in the Start menu)
If it's not installed, you can get it here
Launch the program
Click Scan for updates or Check for updates
Follow the on-screen prompts if updates are found
Restart your computer if prompted
SupportAssist automatically detects your exact Dell model and installs the correct drivers — no guesswork required.
If you need help running updates or encounter any issues, Request a Technology Specialist for assistance. We’re happy to help ensure your computer is fully up to date and running smoothly.
