Keeping Chrome OS (on Chromebooks) and the Google Chrome browser up to date is important for security, performance, and compatibility with district tools like Google Classroom, testing platforms, and instructional websites.
Updates are generally quick, simple, and require very little user interaction.
Chrome OS updates are handled directly by Google and are much lighter and faster than traditional operating system updates.
Chromebooks automatically check for updates in the background
Updates download silently while the Chromebook is in use
A restart is required to finish installing the update
Most Chrome OS updates take only a few minutes
Chrome OS updates can be completed at any time
If you see a message prompting you to restart, the update is already downloaded.
On Windows laptops, desktops, and Macs, Google Chrome updates automatically in the background. When an update is ready to be applied, Chrome will display a message in the upper-right corner of the browser window.
Most staff will see one of the following:
“New Chrome available”
“Finish update”
These messages indicate that the update has already downloaded and simply needs Chrome to be restarted.
To complete the update:
Click “Finish update” (or “New Chrome available”) in the top-right corner
Chrome will briefly close and reopen
Your tabs and windows will automatically restore
No full computer restart is required.
The update notice is small and easy to overlook
Chrome continues working normally until restarted
Many users leave Chrome open for days or weeks at a time
The message blends into the browser interface
Because of this, updates often sit pending until a restart occurs.
