Students may remove keys because of:
Curiosity about “how the keyboard works”
Boredom or fidgeting during instruction
Trying to pop a key back into place after it becomes loose
Peer influence (“my friend did it, so I tried it”)
Misunderstanding how fragile internal hinges and brackets are
While one missing key might seem minor, even small keyboard damage can turn into a larger repair.
When a key is pried off:
The plastic hinge/bracket underneath may snap
The retaining clips can break or bend
The key may no longer register when pressed
The Chromebook may become difficult—or impossible—to use for typing
Keyboard repairs can require specialized parts or a full keyboard replacement
Because the components under each key are small and delicate, even careful attempts to reattach them may not work.
If you notice a Chromebook with missing or loose keys:
Set the device aside so it doesn’t get more damaged
Place it on top of the cart or in a designated area
Request a Technology Specialist for repair or replacement
If the issue appears intentional, inform your site administrator
Repairs may vary depending on the Chromebook model and the extent of the damage.
