"The first time that I used YouTube was probably when I was about 8 or 9 years old. I was using it as a way to find out information about some video game that I was playing at the time. I loved all of the different content that was available to explore but there was some learning to do. I had to learn how to sift through the “bad” videos and how to truly find the information that I was looking for. I ended up finding the type of content creators that tried to make their content joyous and funny. Still using Youtube to this day I have found that I have learned a lot of random skills over the years and how useful it can be. The different communities on the platform also lend to a sense of belonging that can lead to a different way for people to connect."
“YouTube was one of the first social media platforms that I ever interacted with and I was fortunate enough to have a positive experience with it. However, YouTube today is completely different then YouTube 10 years ago. When I would watch YouTube, I was watch innocent videos about people vlogging their days, Christmas hauls, and back to school sketches by creators who were doing it for fun. Now, I have seen first hand through my experience being a Nanny how different YouTube has become. It is a place where thousands of people can leave hate comments, kids are watching videos that should never be on social media, and they are watching videos catered to older generations. YouTube is a culmination of videos that have very little censorship and it has gotten to the point where I don’t even use it anymore, which is sad because it once was my favorite way to unwind.”
