I first got Musical.ly—what’s now known as TikTok—back when I was in middle school, around 2015. As a kid, it was just fun. I never took it seriously; I’d make silly videos and scroll through for entertainment. But once I got to high school, things started to change. People were posting different kinds of content, and I found myself comparing my life to others—what they had, how they looked, and what they were doing. I started spending hours on the app without realizing it, and it began to affect my schoolwork. Breaking that habit wasn’t easy, but over time I learned to manage my self-control. Now, I use TikTok in a healthier way—to learn new hobbies, discover interesting facts, and find inspiration instead of comparison.
“Tiktok is an extremely popular social media platform that was formally known as musically. Musically transitioned to Tiktok in 2018. However, I feel like Tiktok really started to gain more traction in the times of COVID (2020). For me personally, Titkok was a way to feel connected and relate to others around the world during the time of covid where we were isolated in our homes. Tiktok has continued to grow and evolve since then, and I still find that it is a way to connect with others around the world. However, I have also noticed that because of the short form style of the app it is easy to scroll for hours on end. I try to be aware of the amount of time I spend, but at times it can definitely be a distraction. Because of this I try to be aware of the times I am spending on the app and try to limit myself from spending too much time scrolling.”
