I didn’t get Snapchat until I was 17, and at first, it helped me bond with classmates and meet people before moving for college. But I quickly learned that online connections aren't always what they seem. While I’ve met some amazing people, I’ve also experienced the downside of getting too invested too quickly in curated versions of others. "I first created a Snapchat account in middle school as a way to stay connected with my volleyball teammates. It was an enjoyable and convenient way to share quick photos and communicate through group chats. Over time, however, I found myself spending more and more time on the app, feeling a growing need to constantly stay in touch with others. As my use increased, I began iterating with people outside my immediate circle, often “friends of friends.” This gradual shift led me to encounter inappropriate content at a young age, exposing me to things I was not able to process or understand."

Snapchat is a messaging app for sending creative temporary photos and videos, "Snaps," that disappear after being viewed. There is also a "Story" option to share content for 24-hours. Additionally, there is a "Spotlight" tab that allows you to watch short videos.

SAFETY GUIDELINES SNAPCHAT PROVIDES AND SUGGESTS

You must be at least 13 years or older to have any Snapchat account
You must be at least 16 years or older to have a public profile on your Snapchat account
Users who are underage (13-17 years old) cannot change their birth year to appear as though they are 18.
Snapchat offers a feature called a "Family Center" where they can invite thier teens to connect.
Teens recieve an in app warning if someone who they do not have a mutual friend with tries to connect with them/add them.
