A variety of teaching and learning approaches are used including lectures, tutorials, practical workshops and are focused on the practical aspects human resources. Our highly qualified and experienced teaching staff, supported by guest speakers, will deepen your understanding of business and HRM. 

Professional Qualification & Membership

The MSc Human Resource Management has been designed in response to developments within the HRM sector and can lead to professional accreditation by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).


The programme has been accredited by the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD), and therefore meets the highest standards in the profession of People/Human Resource Management. For that reason, the programme design is driven by the CIPD Core Knowledge and Core Behaviour, in line with the CIPD CPD Map, as outlined below: 

Upon successful completion of the Masters Degree, you will be eligible to become an Associate Member of the CIPD automatically*.

Programme Structure

In order to successfully complete the MSc HRM, you will complete all core modules across three terms, with the MSc Project to be completed in your third academic term (May - August for September starts, January - April for January starts). You are required to obtain 60 credits each term, amounting to 180 credits for the entire programme.

Term 1: The HR/People Management Environment

Purpose of Term 1:

The programme is designed around the development of a fundamental understanding of HRM in term 1 (without assuming prior knowledge), and is catered for by the following core modules.

Your Modules:

Term 2: HR/People Management in Organisations

Purpose of Term 2:

Term 2 develops a deeper understanding of various HR areas, and provides our students with the necessary skills to successfully complete their MSc Project.

Your Modules:

Term 3: Researching HR/People Management

Purpose of Term 3:

Term 3 allows students to combine all the knowledge gained on the taught elements in terms 1 and 2 through the completion of the MSc Project.

Additional Information

The sections below provide additional information about the MSc Human Resource Management in relation to study mode options (full-/part-time) and entry requirements -- both academic and professional.

Study Mode Options

Full-time

The MSc Human Resource Management degree is designed as a one-year programme (Masters) when undertaken full-time.

Students will normally dedicate 200 hours per 20-credit module over the duration of a term, with scheduled classes of three hours per week, per module.


Part-time

The MSc Human Resource Management may also be undertaken on a part-time basis (normally home students only), although all classes are currently delivered during the day only.

Normal period of study is two years, assuming completion of the Masters stage. Students will be provided with the flexibility to choose any number of modules (of up to 110 credits, core modules must be completed) each academic year which may impact on the overall duration of the degree programme.

Students will be required to obtain 'day-release' from their employment.

Entry Requirements

General Admission Criteria

Candidates must be able to satisfy the general admission requirements of the University of the West of Scotland as specified in Chapter 2 of the University Regulatory Framework together with the following programme requirements:

Appropriate Undergraduate Qualification

First or second-class Honours degree, or equivalent, in social science or business-related discipline.

Professional & Work Experience

Applicants without a business-related or Honours degree, but with significant and relevant professional experience, may also be considered at the Programme Leader's discretion.
