Below are the different fluency level passages. Use the student's independent reading level for this fluency passage. Ask the tutor coordinator or teacher of your student to find out which level your student is reading on.
Time your student for one minute on a new passage. Keep track of any errors (skipping, substituting words, inaccurate reading, misplaced word endings, etc.) your student makes. If a student goes back and corrects the error independently, then that does not count as an error.
After the reading, take a minute to check for comprehension of the fluency passage.
Record the words read correctly and the comprehension level of the first reading on the lesson plan.
If the student is able to reach the fluency target rate three times on three separate days and has a good comprehension of what was read, then the student may be ready to move up to the next level!
The chart below shows the target fluency rates for each level. When the student has reached the target fluency for that rate at least three separate times and has a good comprehension of what was read, they may be ready to move up to the next reading level.
Chart the words read correctly in one minute on your lesson plan and on the fluency chart.

For online tutoring, download the Fluency Chart to chart digitally or print lesson plan to chart physically to keep track of your student's progress. Pull up the fluency passage that your student is working on and share your screen. Conduct the fluency timing as you would normally as directed above and record the results on the Fluency Chart.
