Pictured on the left is Harry Selke's registration record for his enlistment in World War II. As the record states, he joined on October 16th, 1940. In September of 1940, the United States implemented the Selective Training and Service Act. This required all men between the ages of 21 and 45 to register for the draft. By 1945 50 million men between 19 and 45 had registered for the draft and 10 million had been put into the military. Pictured on the right are Selke's discharge papers that have been shrunken down to fit in his wallet. The discharge papers state that Selke was wounded in France on October 5th, 1944. He went on to receive the purple heart medal for this. Selke continued to live in La Crosse where he became a partial owner of a La Crosse business. He died at the age of 70 on December 2nd, 1981.
